Bundenbach slate fossils
![]() |
My name is Dr. Wouter Südkamp. I am one of the few active collectors of
Hunsrück Slate fossils from Bundenbach (Germany) and I welcome you to my
homepage.
Bundenbach is a so-called conservation Lagerstaette, where the fossils are in an articulated condition and sometimes even show their soft parts (for instance muscles). Every important palaeontological museum in the world has specimens from Bundenbach in their collections. |
The fossils here shown for sale, date from the Early Devonian, Emsian Stage (around 400 million years old) and are mostly found by splitting the slate on the old tip heaps (roof slate-production in Bundenbach stopped in 1999). Consequently, the fossils are sometimes split through, and are on two slabs which must be glued together. Since the fossils are pyritized, X-rays can be made to detect the fossils in the slate before preparation starts.
The fossils shown here are all hand-prepared using scalpels by a specialized collector whose experience began in 1987. Collecting is still going on so that new specimens continue to be found and this homepage will be brought up to date accordingly. We hope you will visit this homepage regularly, therefore.
